Intertidal
Part of the broader Coastal Fragility body of work, Intertidal explores the transitional ecologies of the coastal Southeast, with a specific focus on the shifting ecologies of Georgia’s Sapelo Island. These photographic composites are layered with oceanographic, topographic, bathymetric and maps, cyanotype silhouettes of local flora, and direct photographic studies of fauna native to these environments. The Intertidal series engages physically with the environment. The framing of these works is integral to the concept, and plays a role in the storytelling of each piece. In works like Intertidal #1, the image is encased in a wide steel frame that has been etched and deliberately exposed to the ocean’s saltwater. The resulting oxidized texture serves as a record of time and salinity, effectively allowing the ocean to co-author the final piece.
